Learn more about breast biopsy and Dr Rice’s approach to your medical care.
What is a Breast Biopsy
Dr Rice undertakes breast biopsies as a ultrasound guided procedure to remove a small sample of breast tissue that is then sent to a lab for testing. The testing is undertaken by medical professionals who specialise in analysing tissue to help identify and diagnose potential issues.
Dr Rice may recommend a breast biopsy if you have a suspicious lump in your breast or other signs and symptoms of breast cancer. It can also be used to investigate unusual findings on a mammogram, ultrasound or other breast exam.
Breast biopsy results can identify whether the area in question is cancerous or not. The pathology report from the breast biopsy can help Dr Rice determine whether you need surgery or other treatment.
Ultrasound Guided Biopsy
What is a medical ultrasound – A medical ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to help make images of organs and structures inside the body. The ultrasound helps Dr Rice view inside your body to help see organs, muscles, tendons and blood vessel structures inside your chest.
It is used to help diagnose the causes of pain, swelling and infection in the body’s internal organs and can also help guide biopsies and a range of other uses within the medical profession.
A medical ultrasound is safe, painless, non-invasive, and does not use radiation.
Ultrasound guided biopsy – To help with diagnosis of a tissue such as a lump or sore, an ultrasound can assist by providing images to help identify the location of the cells for a biopsy.
For many biopsies, you’ll receive an injection to numb the area of the breast to be biopsied. A core biopsy needle is then used (guided by the ultrasound) in the procedure to remove a tissue sample that is then examined.
The procedure is less invasive than surgical biopsy, leaves little to no scarring and does not involve exposure to ionising radiation.
Results – What to expect after the procedure
Immediately after the procedure – Dr Rice and the radiology team perform minimally invasive biopsies using local anesthesia, you may feel some discomfort in the biopsy area, but you’ll be able to return to your normal activities the next day.
Dr Rice will and his team will be available to you to ensure your recovery is going to plan.
Results – It may take a week before the results of a breast biopsy are available. After the biopsy, the breast tissue is sent to a lab, where a medical team (pathologist) will analyze the tissue using a microscope and special procedures.
The pathologist prepares a report that is sent to Dr Rice, who will share the results with you. The pathology report includes details about the size and consistency of the tissue samples and the location of the biopsy site. The report describes whether cancer, noncancerous changes or precancerous cells are present.
